Established in 1953, Yalden DIY & Garden has proudly served the local community for over 72 years, combining traditional, personal service with a modern approach to retail.
Timeline of Yaldens
- 1936 – The shop in Three Households, Chalfont St. Giles was built specifically as an ironmonger's residence, and remains largely unchanged to this day.
- 1953 – Robert Edward Yalden purchased the site and began trading as R.E. Yalden.
- 1959 – Robert retired and Bernard and Doris Yalden took over. Bernard’s commitment to greeting every customer personally and stocking everyday essentials laid the foundation for the shop’s enduring reputation.
- 1959–1966 – Robert (Bernard’s son) worked in the business before travelling abroad, where he met his wife, Margaret.
- 1978 – Robert returned to Chalfont St. Giles to work alongside his father until Bernard’s retirement in 1979, continuing the family’s customer-first ethos and expanding the range of products.
- 1997 – Robert’s youngest son, Matthew Yalden, joined the family business, representing the fourth generation.
- 2007 – Matthew took on full management, continuing the Yalden tradition while driving the business forward.
- 2008 – The business rebranded as Yalden DIY & Garden, adopting a new modern logo to reflect its evolving offer.
- 2013 – Celebrated 60 years of trading with a special anniversary logo.
- 2014 – Won four local awards through BAT4CSG: Best Local Business, Best Employer, Best Customer Service, plus Apprenticeship Employer of the Yearfrom Uxbridge College.
- 2015/16 – For the first time, the shop opened on Sundays, which proved an instant success with the community.
- 2017–2019 – Yalden continued to grow its product ranges and community involvement, supporting numerous local events, schools, and organisations through sponsorships and donations, cementing its position as a trusted local hub.
- 2018 Branded Chalfont Decorating Supplies internally, to promote our Trade friendly painting and decorating department.
- 2020–2021 – During the Covid-19 pandemic, Yalden DIY & Garden played a vital role in supporting the local community.
- The shop remained open as an essential retailer, ensuring customers had access to fuel, household goods, DIY supplies and gardening essentials during lockdowns.
- Introduced and expanded free local delivery services to support those shielding or unable to travel.
- Adapted operations rapidly to implement Covid-safe measures, maintaining a safe shopping environment while keeping essential supplies flowing.
- 2022–2024 – The business has continued to modernise while maintaining its traditional values — expanding product lines, growing its loyalty scheme to nearly 13,000 members, and strengthening its online presence and marketing.
- 2025 – Yalden DIY & Garden celebrates over 72 years of trading, proudly remaining family-run and continuing its commitment to quality service, local support, and community spirit.
